Clothing Tips for Guys
- Avoid stripes, prints and plaids. Solid colors photograph much better! Also bring a variety of colorful items as we have many backgrounds to match.
- Avoid large, bold brand names or words on clothing.
- Vary the clothing style and dress level by bringing formal and casual wear. We recommend bringing one or two outfits that “mom” will like, then we can do the items that YOU prefer.
- If you change fast, we can offer you more variety. However, if you spend too long in the dressing room then you will have less time in front of the camera.
- We suggest you bring double the clothes that you think you will need so we can help you choose the items that will photograph best.
- We will photograph close ups, two-thirds and full length images so please plan outfits completely. It is hard to do a full length formal portrait if you don’t bring the proper shoes and accessories.
- Group your outfits together ON HANGERS to save time in the dressing room. Make sure they are ironed and wrinkle free.
- SHAVING
- Please make sure you are clean shaven. Stubble does not look as good as a clean shave.
- HAIR
- Avoid changing your hairstyle or cutting your hair right before your session. Let it be natural. We recommend a haircut at least a week prior to your session.
- PROPS
- Bring props that help define who you are. Some popular choices are: Sports equipment (soccer ball, football, hockey stick), sports uniforms, music instruments (from school tuba to rock guitar), activities (Collectibles, swimming, hobbies, you name it!), vehicles, and your pet/animals. (Pet/animals and vehicles are limited to the Ultimate session ONLY)
- Complexion
- We retouch blemishes, so don't worry about minor breakouts. Retouching is available on every print and product we produce.
Clothing Tips for Girls:
- Avoid stripes, prints and plaids. Solid colors photograph much better! Also bring a variety of colorful items as we have many backgrounds to match.
- Avoid large, bold brand names or words on clothing unless it is your school logo.
- Vary the clothing style and dress level by bringing formal and casual wear. We recommend bringing one or two outfits that “mom” will like, then we can do the items that YOU prefer
- Bring the BLING! Necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, hair bands, belts, hats, etc. Proper accessories can MAKE an outfit and add visual interest to your images. -If you change fast, you can get more variety. Spend all day in the dressing room fixing your hair or make-up and you get less time in front of the camera.
- We suggest you bring double the clothes that you think you will need so we can help you choose the items that will photograph best.
- We will photograph close ups, two-thirds and full length images so please plan outfits completely. It is hard to do a full length formal portrait if you don’t bring the proper shoes and accessories.
- Avoid sleeveless tops. Most people do not like their upper arms or shoulders in photographs. Sleeveless tops tend to make arms look larger and fuller. 3/4 and long sleeves work best.
- Make sure that your outfits flatter YOU. Many of the "new" fashion styles are cute and fun, but may not necessarily flatter your figure in a portrait. Loose, baggy clothing may add unwanted inches to your waistline. Remember, some of your images may be posed sitting on the ground or laying down, so super short skirts or shorts may not be appropriate.
- Sweaters, Jackets and turtle necks can be very flattering. They can hide imperfections and focus the attention on your face and expression.
- Layered outifts are a good choice, you can add or drop a piece of clothing for a different look.
- Group your outfits together ON HANGERS and make sure they are ironed and wrinkle free.
- The black and white "glamour" look that is so popular is best with solid black clothing. The contrast between the skin and black is what makes them so dramatic.
- Makeup
- Makeup should only be slightly heavier than normal. About like you might wear in the evening.
- Mascara should be clean and contain no clumps.
- Avoid makeup with "sparkles" in it. Those sparkles do not photograph well and distract from you in the image.
- Avoid makeup with an SPF in it. Although it is good for your skin in the sun, the SPF tends to create a shine or sweaty look on you face.
- Avoid self tanning lotions as they tend to make you look "orange" and leave streaks or unusual color patches that the camera will see.
- Hair
- Avoid changing your hairstyle or cutting your hair right before your session. Let it be natural. Bring your hair care tools and products if you need to. We do have some available at the studio for you as well.
- Jewelry
- In most cases, keep it simple. Big, shiny jewelry can distract from the real subject, YOU.
- Don't forget your special jewelry. Your class ring, grandmother's pearls or diamond earrings can add extra meaning to an outfit or portrait.
- If you have different jewelry for different outfits, put each set of jewelry in a separate plastic baggie and hang it on the hangar with that outfit.
- Props
- Bring props that help define who you are. Some popular choices are: Sports equipment such as a soccer ball, volley ball, or cheer/dance wear. We also recommend sports uniforms, music instruments, and any other items that show who you are and what your hobbies and interest are.
- Tanlines/Sunburns
- Tan lines and/or sunburns do not photograph well. We can retouch tan lines but it is best to avoid direct exposure one week prior to your session.
- Undergarments
- Please bring appropriate foundation wear for each outfit. Flesh colored undergarments work best. Also, if you need a strapless bra, bring one and make sure it matches the color of the item you will be wearing so it does not cause a color shift in your outfit.
- Finger & Toe
Nails
- Remember that your nails and toe nails will show in your photographs. Avoid bright nail colors as it can be distracting in your images. Natural colors work best as to not draw attention away from YOU.
